Final Film Opening - The Girl Next Door

This is my finished film opening titled 'The Girl Next Door'. I am really pleased with the finished result and I feel it was worth me deciding to go with my own idea to create this film opening.

Production:Editing 2

With me having done all the other pieces of editing, I only had left to do the titles for the film opening. Using Premiere Pro meant it was easy to create new titles and the design I had in mind wasn't too difficult to do either. By selecting 'new title' at the top of the page, I inserted the text and selected what font and style I wanted for it. Then, all I needed to do was to slot the titles in where I wanted them to go and adjust the time it takes for them to fade on and off the screen. This fading is done my adjusting the key frames on the 'stage'. This is shown in the images below.

Overall, I feel the software is very simple and easy to use, but something I did find annoying was the way it kept crashing on me as it had so much information to register. However, apart from this, I would recommend it to anybody who wants to create their own film.

Time Management: Update

The deadline is fast approching and I feel positive that I'm on track to complete it for this Friday. The only piece of editing I need to do now is to insert the titles which shouldn't take too long to do. I am hopeful to complete it for tomorrow!

Production:Editing

When it came to editing this time around, I felt more confident about what I was doing as I had had some practice when editing the beginning of my other film opening.
The first thing I had to do was to download the video clips from the video camera using 'Adobe OnLocation' software. I found this pretty straight forward to do, but it was very annoying when I came to look at some of the clips I have captured as I found I had missed some vital pieces of video off the start/end and this meant I had to go back and re-capture the clips using the software. Apart from this, I found the sofware really useful and easy to use.
Below show images of the 'Adobe Onlocation' software I used and me capturing my video clips off the video camera.

Once I had captured all my clips from the video camera, it was then time for me to upload them using 'Adobe Premiere Pro' software. This was very simple to do and the software allows you to upload them all and stores them until you're ready to edit them. The images below show this software and where the software stores your clips until you're ready to edit them.

Once I had inserted the clips onto the editing 'stage', it was very easy for me to edit these to make them the right size. The software allows you to select the clip you want and by holding the mouse down and dragging, you are able to crop or lengthen the clip. I found this to be really useful and the software makes this even more easier by allowing you to make the 'editing stage' bigger so to allow you to be more precise in what you're editing. The images below show the cropping process and tool that allows you to zoom in on the stage to make editing even more precise.

Once I had finished getting all clips the right size, I needed to join them together, which was very simple to do if I had normal jump cuts between each clip. However, if this wasn't the case, then I was able to use the 'Video Effects' selection which allowed me to put dissolving transitions between the clips. This came very useful when changing from the different shots showing different locations e.g from boy's speech to girl appearing in the bedroom. When it came to deciding what to use between the clips where the girl is applying her make up, I wasn't too sure and had originally planned to use dissolving transitions. However, after talking to my teacher, we both decided it would look best to use jump cuts as it will help to speed the filming up and make it more exciting. The image below shows the different effects you can use on your video clips.

After I had a continuous run of film, it was then time for me to add music. Of course with my opening, I didn't need any music, apart from the boy's speech over the filming. I easily inserted the music and edited it by cropping it to fit the right places in the filming. I then only had to mute the sound on the other filming clips so that it was only the boy's voice you could hear.

Production:Filming

I feel filming went really well this weekend. I met my two actors at the location and I was pleased to find all props were already set up and ready for us to start filming.

The first shot with Dan talking to the camera didn't start to plan as he forgot quite a bit of his speech. However, after quite a few takes, he got it spot on and I'm sure this will look really good when it comes to editing it.

I felt Ellie played her part really well and we didn't have to retake many shots. The only problem we faced in the bedroom shot was the alarm clock I had brought wasn't working properly so we were able to use the alarm on my phone as back up. When this happened, I was glad that I thought about bringing two alarms in case the one didn't work. The shot under the bed worked well and I didn't end up falling over when doing this, which was a bonus! The images below show me filming the shot under the bed and a shot of Ellie practicing her 'asleep' shot.

The shots in the bathroom all went well. I was pleased at how my friend had been able to do her hair in a 'big style' as this made it easier when I did the panning of the bathroom as when it comes to editing, it should be easier to bring the two clips together without making it obvious that I have used two different shots. The images below show me practicing filming for this shot and Ellie practicing a shot that we eventually decided not to use as we felt it didn't really make sense to have it in.

With the outside shots, I found I had to film many takes for this as Ellie couldn't open the gate a couple of times and we had the noise of a tractor in a field, which was very off putting for the actors. However, we did eventually manage to film this correctly and I feel I shouldn't have too much trouble when it comes to editing these parts.

Planning:Risk Assessment

RISK

RISK
 POTENTIAL

PREVENTATIVE
MEASURES
There is laminate flooring in the bedroom, somebody could slip over.

Having electrical equipment in the bathroom.

4

3
Wear any form of footwear or socks with some grip.

Make sure you keep electrical equipment away from water.
Opening the main driveway gate, somebody could get their hand trapped.

Walking on the road, somebody could get hurt with cars going up and down the road.

3

3
Open the gate slowly and with care.

Walk to the side of the road. Make sure nothing is coming.

This shows the risk assesment for my day of filming. As you can see, there are no major risks that we will be taking when filming. We just need to be aware of the things around us.

Planning:Filming

I am lucky in that I have no need to book out equipment as I have checked my camera with the college software and both work together. I must remember to charge it up well though as the battery can run down pretty fast!
I'm also fortunate in that I have a tripod I can use for my film opening so there's no need for me to book out one of those either.
Below shows an image of the type of video camera I will be using to film my opening and the software to edit the footage.

Time Management:Update

I am hoping to do my filming this weekend (22nd/23rd Jan). I plan to be at my friend's house for 9.00am and by this time, all things should be set up, such as placing the props in the right position.
Hopefully if this goes well, then I will be able to get the editing done in my lessons and in my frees ready for the deadline. If there does need to be any emergency filming done, then I'm sure I will be able to fit it in sometime in the week.

Organisation:Locations

I decided with my film opening that I wouldn't have any shots with my characters around college, so when it came to locations, I only really need a normal house. I am therefore going to use my best friend's house as it is located in the countryside, so hopefully it will be reasonably quiet when filming.

This first image shows one of the bedrooms in my friend's house. The reason we are going to use this bedroom is because it contains a bed where we can see right underneath it, making it easy to film the shot under the bed.

This second image shows my friend's bathroom which will be ideal when filming as it contains a mirror and when I have to pan around the bathroom, it will show how a typical bathroom should look.

This final image shows the outside of my friend's house. This will be where the girl will see the boy walking down the road.

I also needed a plain white wall for when Dan says his speech at the beginning of the film. My friend has informed me that she has many walls for me to choose from!

Organisation:Props/Costumes

Below shows a list of the different types of props required for my film opening. A lot are very much the same as the others required for my other film opening.

Props

* School Bag x2
* Bedroom Props (Such as bedside cabinet)
* Alarm Clock x2 (Two to be on the safe side)
* Mirror
*Make Up (Such as mascara and powder puff)

When it came to costumes, I didn't really need any specified dress code as Dan and Ellie were sort of playing the part of themselves, in the sense that they are students on a normal day going to college. I therefore asked them to wear what they felt comfortable in and what they considered to be their everyday college clothes.
Below are images showing the type of costumes they will be wearing.

Organisation:Casting

I have to say when it came to choosing who to cast for the opening of my film, I didn't really have much choice in who I chose. With little time left for me to do my filming, I asked my best friend and her boyfriend to act for me as I knew they would be comfortable acting in front one another. I also knew that her boyfriend does 'StageCoach' so he knew all about how to act properly. I really hope their acting skills can make it look like the opening of a real film!

Below are images showing my best friend and her boyfriend, who will playing the two main characters.

Ellie Parkinson
will be playing the girl, who the guy really wishes he had as his girlfriend. A typical 'girl next door' type of character.

Dan White
will be playing the boy, who feels very ashamed and depressed that he can't find a girl to love. A typical 'clueless guy when it comes to love' type of character.

Shot 20:
Title Shot of the main title of the film. This is displayed as before.

Planning:Script

Below is the script I'm using for the boy's speech in the opening of my film. I've made it seem rather romantic and over dramatic to help portray the boy as being clueless when it comes to love. It shows he thinks love is always happy and magical, but love isn't alwasys as easy as this and there are so many problems when love is involved.

"There once was a guy, who tried his very best to get the attention of others and when I say others, I mean girls! But it seemed that no matter how hard he tried, he just couldn't get anyone to notice him. You may be wondering who this guy is, well I can in fact tell you you're staring right at him!"

This next part is his speech that will play over the filming of the girl getting ready.

"I'm just a normal guy who is looking for a girl. A girl who when she wakes up shines as bright as the sun, hair flowing down over her shoulders, a girl who is not afraid to open doors to new beginnings. I'd love her for who she is and who she'd love me for. I may see her applying her make up each day and every day, but I'd tell her there's no need to hide behind that for the room could spin a thousand times and she'd still look as beautiful. She'd walk with pride, confidence and so would I at the thought of this girl being mine.
I keep asking myself though, is it really that hard to find the girl next door, who every time she'd walk past would beam at you, projecting her smile to you and you've done well to be honest. I think even if she was staring at me straight in the face I wouldn't notice. The thought of even one girl looking at me seems beyond a dream."

Planning:Second Film Opening

I began thinking what I could possibly do for my film opening and in the end, my idea is not a lot different to the original idea. After getting a few ideas from my teacher, I decided that instead of portraying the girl as the main character, I would have a boy as the one who is unlucky in love and the film following his love story. The plan is to have the boy talking directly to the camera about how useless he is with girls, followed by shots of the girl he wishes could be his.

The shots of the girl will be no different to how it was in my other film opening. The girl will still be waking up, getting up, going to the bathroom, but whereas in the first one she was messing with her hair, she will be doing her make-up. After this, we will see her leaving her house and spotting the guy of her dreams. He will carry on walking, unaware she feels the same way as he does and it will end with her upset and him carrying on to college, not even being aware of her feelings towards him.

I took inspiration for my film opening from watching the Annie Hall opening sequence which can been seen below. I want to recreate this opening in a similar way, apart from I would have my male character being more romantic in what he says as I want to portray him as being somebody who hasn't a clue in love and that he believes it's all lovey dovey, when really the audience know it isn't.

Time Management - Update

Disaster has struck! Megan wasn't able to do her filming and with the deadline next week, I'm wondering whether she will be able to get it done. I have therefore taken it upon myself to create my own film opening as I'm increasingly worried that we won't have all our filming and editing done by the deadline. It may not work out, but I've decided to have a safety net in case things don't get done!

Production:Filming 3

Well we managed to get the filming done on Wednesday and I was pleased how it went as Luke was able to do all we needed him to do and his driving through the puddle was spot on! The weather on the day was very similar to when we had filmed on the other days, so that was a bonus! Hopefully we can upload this shots for editing tomorrow and then we just need Megan to do her filming at her house. If that goes to plan then we should be back on track.

Time Management - Update

Well, what seemed to be all going to plan has turned in a completely different direction and headed down hill! The filming we were hoping to do this week with Tom and his car has had to be changed. When I say changed, I mean Tom is unable to do the filming as he is still off ill. I have therefore managed to recruit a friend of mine, Lucas, who is not only willing to act for us, but can also drive, meaning there is no need for us to get a separate driver for the filming. We plan to do the filming for these shots in one of our lunch breaks this week, perhaps Wednesday (19th). Fingers crossed this works!

Production:Editing

Because we managed to get quite a lot of filming done this weekend, we thought it was best that we started to upload the clips onto the computer using 'On-location' software. This was quite simple to do as the connectivity between the camera and computer was done using a fire wire lead. We simply played our recordings and selected the clips we wanted to use. A good thing we found about this was we had a lot of clips to choose from so if any didn't work, we had a back-up plan!
Once all the clips had be downloaded, we opened them up in the software 'Premiere Pro' and began to see which ones were useful and which weren't. It was at this point that I noticed some major problems with the filming we had done. Firstly, the alarm clock shots were showing different times on each and because it was a Saturday, the date was being displayed, which didn't really fit into our opening as our character wouldn't be going to college on a Saturday. There was also the problem in that our teacher felt we hadn't done enough shots to make it a 'flowing' storyline, in that, we see the female character waking up, but we don't actually see her physically getting up. We had automatically jumped to her sitting on the side of her bed and walking out the room.

On the whole, what we thought had been a successful days shooting hadn't and we knew at this point it would probably be best to fit some emergency filming into our schedule, while we still had time.

Production:Filming 2

I feel this filming didn't go as well as I would have liked it to have. It seemed that whenever we were filming, we couldn't quite get the camera in the right position and a lot of the filming was 'shaky'. In particular the shot under the bed as there was no way we could use a tripod.
However, I feel we managed to get some good pieces of filming in the bathroom and Steph played her part very well - especially the 'just got up' scene!
Hopefully all this filming will be worth it and our main task now is to get the piece of filming with Tom and the car done.

Monday 7 February 2011

Planning:Filming 2

Our next task on the filming front is to film Steph's part in the bedroom and bathroom. The plan is for me to get up early this Saturday morning, travel to Megan's house, where the filming will take place, and record Steph's charcter waking up and getting ready on a normal college morning. It is my responsibility to remember the alarm clock and hair straighteners so I'm definitely putting them in my bag the night before!
We're hoping that with us doing the filming this early in the morning, the natural light will reflect the amount of light needed in the film opening.

Production:Filming

Well filming went ahead yesterday morning. We met Steph by the entrance of college and went through what we had to do step by step. I thought Steph played her part really well, despite the interruption of the rainy weather! It was definitely a good thing to have umbrellas with us! The only problem we had with the weather was because we needed so many umbrellas up while filming, we managed to capture some of the umbrella in the filming, meaning we had to re-film several parts of the opening. However this wasn't necessarily a bad thing as we had several clips to refer to if there were any problems with the other clips.
The only downside to our filming was Tom was unable to do the filming at this time as he was off college ill. We have therefore had to arrange another time to film his part which is a pain, but I'm sure we can fit it in sometime.

Planning:Filming

We have everything ready for the filming (7th Jan) at and around college. We have informed our main characters (Steph and Tom) to be ready at 9.00am at the entrance of college. We thought it may also be a good idea to warn them that they may need 'wet weather gear' as the forcast is looking very wet!

When deciding what technology we'll use, we are lucky in that we have no need to 'book' a video camera from college as Megan has checked her camera with the college's editing software and it all works well together. We also knew that there would be no need for lighting equipment as we were filming outside.
Before setting out to do filming, we completed a risk assessment, which helped us analyse whether there were any major risks we were taking while filming. Overall, they were only small risks and so we were given the go ahead with our filming from our teacher and the computer technician. This risk assessment can be found on Megan's blog.

Tuesday 1 February 2011

Time Management:Updates

At this point in time, we are well on the way to begin our filming for our opening. Cast are all ready and we have props collected for filming. We hope to be doing filming this weekend and should hopefully be editing the beginning of this week. To make sure we are keeping up to date with things, we have produced a 'Google Calendar' to remind us about certain tasks needing to be done and it also helps us plan ahead.
Below shows a screen shot of my calendar for the month January.

Organisation:Locations

We had a look around a few places where we could possibly film the opening of our film and in the end decided on the places below.

The first location we chose was Megan's bedroom and bathroom and the reason we chose this location was because it had the right type of bed to suit our filming (a bed that we can see underneath so to position the camera in the right place) and because it had the right feel to it, the same feel you get when you enter a teenage's bedroom. The bathroom was a nice light and tidy room that we felt would be perfect, as well as it also having a large mirror.

The next two locations are settings at and around college. One will show the girl's route to college and the other will show where she gets splashed by the car, the boy emerging from the car and walking into college, followed by her walking into college. The main reason for filming this here is we thought it is a place we come to everyday, so if there is any emergency filming needing to be done later on, we haven't really got to go out of our way to film again.

Organisation:Props/Costumes

Below shows a list of the different types of props required for our film opening. For items like the alarm clock, straighteners and toy truck, we made sure we had two of each, just in case one of them didn't work.

Props

* School Bag x2 (One for Samantha and one for Greg)
* Straighteners x2 (Two just to be on the safe side)
* Bedroom Props (Such as bedside cabinet)
* Alarm Clock x2 (Two to be on the safe side)
* Lights x3 (Such as bedside lamps and spotlights)
* Mirror
* Toy Truck for camera movement x2 (Two to be on the safe side)
* Car (For the splashing scene)

When it came to costumes, we didn't really need any specified dress code as the actors were sort of playing the part of themselves, in the sense that they are students on a normal day at college. We therefore asked them to wear what they felt comfortable in and what they consider to be their everyday college clothes.

Organisation:Casting

When it came to casting, we had a rough idea of who we were going to chose to be our main cast, but to be totally sure, we asked the potential to act some of the film, while standing in front of a mirror. We felt this would show whether they felt confident enough doing this shot where they would be looking at themselves in a mirror, with also having a camera pointing at them. The results, to be honest, weren't too helpful as all potential actors/actresses passed it and it was up to us to chose who would be best for the role in our eyes. Below shows a list of the potential actors/actresses:

*Ellie Parkinson
*Steph Ferriday
*Tom Evans
*Dan White
*Fran

In the end, out of the people above, we decided to have Steph playing the part of our main female character as she, compared to all other potentials, had more experience with acting, and she was quite used to the storyline as she had experienced a simple situation as the character she was to play.
We were unsure who to chose when it came to casting the main male character, but in the end decided with Tom as he lived the nearest and he proved to be somebody who wasn't camera shy! We also needed some extras so we've asked a group of Tom's friends if they wouldn't mind being in some of the backgrounds of the shots to act as some other students going to college. Hopefully our decisions we chose will be the right ones!

Cast List

* Samantha - Steph Ferriday
* Greg - Tom Evans
* Extras - Megan Farr
                  Steph Ferriday
                  Ellie Parkinson

Medium Close Up of the main character beginning to walk across her bedroom. The camera is at a low angle, and starts to pan to under the bed. We still at this point do not see her face.

Shot 10:
Long Shot of the girl walking out of the room. The camera here, has panned to a position under the bed where we can watch her walking out of the room.

Shot 11:
Medium Close Up of the main character in the mirror. The camera pans up from the floor to see her face in the mirror. The camera begins to zoom in.

Shot 12:
Close Up of the main character’s facial expression. We can see that she isn’t looking good, and that she isn’t pleased with her appearance.

Shot 13:
Medium Close Up of the main character looking to her left (on camera, our right). We can tell that she is thinking about something quite intently.

Shot 14:
Close Up of the hair straighteners, we can tell from this shot and the shot before that these are the solution to the main character’s not-so-perfect appearance.

Shot 15:
Close Up of the main character as she pulls and plays with her hair, debating still what can she do with her hair to make herself look a bit better.

Shot 16:
Close Up of the main character’s face doing the same as above, but whilst this is happening the camera will pan to the left, in time with her eye movement which will be doing the same as the camera.

Shot 17:
Close Up of the other side of the main character’s face, as the camera will have panned from the left with her eye movement. The camera will then pan  to the right again.

Shot 18:
Medium Close Up of the whole of the main character’s face again, as this will be the last time we see a shot of her not looking good. The camera then carries on to pan around, not focusing on her face.

Shot 19:
Long Shot of the bathroom where the girl is getting ready. The camera will pan around the room.

Shot 20:
Medium Close Up – The camera will have continued to pan until a shot of the main character comes on screen looking much better than she did before. The camera will have panned in from the right.

Shot 21:
Close Up of a title screen, saying about the production company who has made this film opening sequence.

Shot 22:
Close Up of another title screen, this time it will be saying something along the lines of ‘Starring’ which will then be followed by...

Shot 23:
Close Up of a title screen, this time containing the names of people who starred in the sequence.

Shot 24:
Long Shot of the main character as she walks along the road, on her way to college. The camera pulls out slowly as she moves.

Shot 25:
Medium Close Up of the girl’s face probably looking quite startled, and quite confused as to who is tooting the car horn at her.

Shot 26:
Long Shot of the car, in which the male character, who the main character is interested in, is sitting in the passenger’s seat. From this shot we should be able to see the male character, but not incredibly clearly.

Shot 27:
Close Up of a title screen, this will show the main title in a puddle which will then fade.

Shot 28:
Close Up of the car’s wheel as it splashes through quite a big puddle. The shot shows the splash.

Shot 29:
Medium Close Up of the water splash getting the main character soaked.

Shot 30:
Long Shot of the main character gasping because the water has just wet her. In this shot we see her soaked from head to toe, and this shot will show her horror that she has just been drenched.

Shot 31:
Close Up of the male character’s foot as he steps out of the car. The camera in this shot will slowly start to begin to pan upwards.

Shot 32:
Long Shot of the whole of the male character’s body, the camera will have panned up to this shot of the whole of him.

Shot 33:
Long Shot of the main character standing after seeing the male character getting out of the car, we get the impression from this shot that she lusts after the male character. The camera is panning into her face gradually.

Shot 34:
Close Up of the main character’s face, this will show her facial expression in more detail and will further emphasise the point that she lusts after the male character.

Shot 35:
Long Shot of the male character walking into the college. This will be the shot, and the reverse shot will be as follows...

Shot 36:
Medium Close Up – this shot will be the reverse shot to the shot above. It will show the girl character looking upset as the male character will not even aknowledge her, let alone apologise for getting her wet.

Shot 37:
Long Shot of the girl walking into the college. The camera will follow this.
